Justin Greene
Justin Greene is a writer and director.
Justin wrote, with composer Steve Brown, book and lyrics for the critically acclaimed musical, “Spend Spend Spend” and directed the world premiere of the show at the Leeds Playhouse. “Spend Spend Spend” was the culmination of a series of Justin’s and Steve’s previous, unperformed collaborations.
Justin’s West End theatre productions include, David Pownall’s “Master Class” with Timothy West as ‘Stalin’, Bob Larbey’s “A Month of Sundays” with George Cole (Comedy of the Year award), “Journey’s End” and Peter Nichols’ “A Piece of My Mind”, also with George Cole. For the National Theatre, Justin co-directed, with Michael Bogdanov, “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” and “Macbeth”.
Other notable productions include the British premier of Arthur Kopit’s “Road to Nirvana” at the Traverse Theatre, his own adaptation of Boccaccio’s “The Decameron” for the touring company, Paines Plough, (Edinburgh Festival Fringe First award) and Tom McGath’s “Animal” and the musical, “Love Off the Shelf” (both Nuffield Theatre).
He directed and, with Steve Cooke, wrote the sci-fi comedy “Totally Foxed”, which premiered at the Nuffield Theatre starring Jimmy Mulville and later toured nationally with Chris Barrie and Nicola Paget. Further collaborations with Steve Cooke included “Ludwig & Bertie”, a farce about the meeting of Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein (Edinburgh Festival and National Theatre) and a BBC radio play, “Seven-Thirty for Eight”.
Justin also directed productions for the Young Vic, Lyric Hammersmith, Nottingham Playhouse, Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Watford Palace Theatre, and Bristol Old Vic. He was Associate Director of the Leicester Haymarket Theatre and the touring company Paines Plough, and was Artistic Director of the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton.
For Hat Trick Productions, Justin adapted and directed Saki’s “The Chronicles of Clovis” (BBC Radio) and wrote the audiobook, “Cyberbia”, read by Rebecca Front.
For Humphrey Barclay Productions, Justin produced, two series of Roger Hall’s comedy series, “Conjugal Rites” (based on the stage play Justin had directed), starring Michael Williams and Gwen Taylor.
Justin’s first full-length play (Edinburgh Festival 1974) was the surprisingly prescient “Trump”, about a pyramid seller who ends up the leader of a cult religion!
